“We undertook an assessment of Coppice Lea between 18 and 24 September 2025. We visited the service on 18 September 2025. Coppice Lea is a nursing home providing accommodation for persons who require nursing or personal care. It is registered for 53 people. However, the provider told us they had decommissioned 10 of the rooms to use as storage rooms or staff rooms. At the time of our assessment there were 42 people using the service.”

“The inspection was prompted in part by concerns received about the service in relation to poor pre-admission assessments, ongoing assessments, monitoring systems and medicines management. There had also been some concerns in relation to record keeping. This inspection examined these risks.”

“We found breaches of legal regulations in relation to risk management, medicines management and governance.”

“During this assessment, we found processes to help ensure that risks to people were assessed and mitigated were not always effective and there had been repeated incidents whereby a person had left the building unsupervised. We found some shortfalls in the management of medicines and people did not always receive their medicines safely and as prescribed. The provider’s monitoring systems had not always been effective as they had failed to identify and address the concerns we found during our inspection.”

“Although the staff received training in dementia care and showed knowledge in this area, the provider had given a person notice to leave following a number of incidents whereby they had left the building unsupervised during anxious and distressed episodes, rather than find ways to keep them safe and meet their needs.”

“There were good systems to protect people from the risk of infection and cross contamination, and staff followed good practice. The home was clean, fresh and well-maintained. There were systems in place for the safe recruitment of staff. People and their relatives were involved in their pre-admission assessment, care planning and the management of individual risks. Staff received regular training and had their competencies checked. People’s end of life wishes had been considered and documented. Staff spoke favourably of the management team and felt listened to and consulted.”
