“Date of Assessment: 27 May 2026 and 1 June 2026. Glenwood Care Home provides nursing care and accommodation for up to 12 adults with a learning disability, mental health needs and complex needs. The home is made up of two separate bungalows with an adjoining hallway and there are 6 people in each bungalow. At the time of our assessment there were 9 people living at the home.”

“The assessment was prompted due to an aged rating. We assessed the home against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities. We found people received safe care and were happy living at Glenwood Care Home.”

“Systems were in place to keep people safe from the risk of abuse, and lessons were learned from incidents when they occurred. Regular safety checks were carried out on the environment, utilities and equipment. People received their prescribed medicines at the right time and in the correct way, and safe infection prevention and control practices were followed to minimise the risk of infection.”

“People had a say in the design and decoration of their bedrooms, which were personalised and reflected individual preferences. While some communal areas were less homely in appearance, this was discussed with the registered manager, who acknowledged the feedback and confirmed plans were in place to improve these spaces.”

“Care plans were person-centred and incorporated best practice guidance for supporting people with a learning disability and autistic people. People and their families were involved in decisions about their care, including assessments, care planning and reviews, enabling them to make informed choices.”

“Staff understood people’s communication needs and used appropriate methods to communicate effectively. People were treated with kindness and respect, and staff actively promoted independence.”

“There was a range of meaningful activities and opportunities both within the home and in the local community. Staff supported people to maintain good health and wellbeing.”

“The provider and registered manager demonstrated a commitment to continuous improvement through effective governance systems. The culture of the home was positive and person-centred, with staff reporting good morale and enjoyment in their roles.”

“While many aspects of Right Care, Right Support and Right Culture were demonstrated in practice, the external presentation of the home did not fully align with these principles, particularly Right Support and Right Culture. During the inspection, aspects of the environment included internal signage, staff wearing lanyards and uniforms, and visible external branding and equipment. These were raised with management and action was taken promptly, including removal of internal signage, changes to staff attire and adjustments to the environment.”

“However, the external sign identifying the setting as a care home remained in place. This contributed to a more institutional appearance and does not support a homely, discreet environment or promote ordinary living within the community.”
