“Assessment date: 1 and 2 September 2026.”

“Ghyll Royd Care Home is a nursing care home providing accommodation and personal care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, physical disabilities, sensory impairments and mental health needs. The service can support up to 76 people and 49 people were using the service at the time of inspection. We inspected to update the rating for this service.”

“Staff worked closely with healthcare professionals to ensure people’s changing needs were identified and responded to promptly, and care plans were detailed, person-centred and regularly reviewed.”

“People benefited from a caring and inclusive culture where their wellbeing, independence and choices were promoted. Staff demonstrated a good understanding of people’s individual preferences, risks and support needs, and worked collaboratively with relatives and professionals to achieve positive outcomes. Medicines were managed safely, infection prevention and control arrangements were effective, and safeguarding processes were well understood and consistently followed.”

“However, we identified some areas where further improvements were needed. Feedback about staffing levels was mixed, with some people, relatives and staff describing occasions when staff appeared rushed. Although staffing levels were assessed and monitored, leaders recognised the need to continue working with people, relatives and staff to provide assurance about staffing arrangements. People and relatives expressed significant dissatisfaction with the quality and variety of meals provided. Managers responded immediately, implemented improvements and developed a clear action plan to improve people’s dining experiences.”

“The service was led by approachable and committed leaders who promoted openness, learning and continuous improvement. Governance systems were largely effective in identifying risks and monitoring the quality of care, and leaders demonstrated a willingness to listen to feedback and act when concerns were raised. Overall, people received safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led care from a staff team committed to achieving positive outcomes and maintaining a supportive, person-centred culture.”
