“We carried out this assessment on 16 September to 24 September. This service was previously rated as good. We carried out this assessment to confirm whether the rating of good remains accurate. This report does not provide detailed information on areas where we found practice continues to meet a good standard. Instead, our findings focus on any areas where the service needs to improve or where we found exceptional practice.”

“We found people were supported safely by staff who knew them well and staff treated people with dignity and respect while delivering person centred care. Risks related to people’s care was well managed with frequent reviews of peoples care needs. Care records were detailed, giving staff clear guidance in how to support people, including people’s communication and cultural needs. Staff were able to explain how they supported people to meet their goals and remain as independent as possible.”

“People told us and records confirmed there were enough skilled staff to support people at the service. There were effective systems and processes in place to support people and to ensure they were safeguarded from abuse and neglect.”

“Medicines were administered and stored safely. Staff were knowledgeable about people’s medicines and ensured people knew why medicines had been prescribed.”

“Staff were recruited safely, with effective recruitment processes in place to ensure staff were appropriate to work with vulnerable people, including disclosure and baring checks (DBS).”

“The service was clean and well maintained. The registered manager and management team carried out regular audits and monitoring of the environment to ensure the environment remained safe. A refurbishment plan was in place concentrating on making peoples rooms more personal to them.”

“The registered manager and provider had effective oversight of accidents and incidents. Any learning from incidents within the service and any other homes owned by the provider were shared with staff to improve outcomes for people.”

“Staff described the manager as visible, helpful and responsive to their concerns.”

“People received care that was person centred to their needs as staff knew them and their routines well. The registered manager told us how they supported people by using a relationship-based approach rather than being task focused, this included finding out what was important to people. However, some improvements could be made to ensure care records are more person centred and reflect how involved people are in their own care. Other improvements, including analysis of accidents and incidents had already been identified by the provider, with new systems in the process of being embedded across all of their services.”

“People can only be deprived of their liberty to receive care and treatment with appropriate legal authority. In care homes, this can be done through a procedure called the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS), which is part of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA). We checked whether the service was working within the principles of the MCA and how they managed DoLS within the service. We found that staff and management worked within the MCA. DoLS authorisations were appropriately applied for and overseen. People were not subject to unlawful or excessive restrictions they had choice, control and freedom over their lives.”
