“Date of Assessment: 24 March to 16 April 2025. Beechwood House is a residential care home providing personal care for up to 5 people with learning disabilities or autistic people. At the time of this inspection, 5 people were living at the service.”

“We assessed the service against ‘Right support, right care, right culture’ guidance to make judgements about whether the provider guaranteed people with a learning disability and autistic people respect, equality, dignity, choices, independence and good access to local communities that most people take for granted.”

“At the last inspection we identified a breach of regulation in relation to the failure to follow the principles of the Mental Capacity Act (MCA). ‘Best interests assessments’ had not taken place prior to restrictions being placed on people. The provider had systems to monitor and assess the quality of the service. However, these had not identified the gaps in the monitoring of people’s financial support and ensuring the MCA code of practice was followed. At this inspection, improvements had been made, and the service was no longer in breach of regulations. The quality assurance systems now captured all aspects of the service.”

“The provider promoted a culture of inclusion, equality and respecting people’s diversity. The staff embraced this approach and work diligently to embed these principles into their everyday practice. With support from the registered manager, one of the staff members had worked with the local authority to set up a LGBTQ+ forum. The staff member had created easy read documents to explain what people’s rights were, inclusion and diversity principles and how to explore this in individuals care records. The staff team with the people ran the annual PRIDE events from the home and all of the people from the provider’s local houses joined these events. These were very well attended and people told us they found them fun, engaging and helped them understand how to be inclusive.”

“The provider ensured the service put people first. They encouraged people to share their views and always looked to see what improvements could be made. Staff actively supported people to develop the skills needed to live more independently and reach their full potential. The registered manager ensured the assessments were completed in a timely manner and were regularly reviewed. Care records clearly detailed people’s needs and were written in a person-centred manner. Some people had been supported to write their own assessments and support plans. Staff knew how to provide safe care. They understood people's needs and how to manage any presenting risks.”

“The provider and registered manager promoted a learning culture where staff had access to a wide range of training, which equipped them with the skills and knowledge to work well with people. Staff found the training really supported them to provide the best care possible for the people who used the service. The provider ensured there were enough staff available to support people. Recruitment practices were meeting requirements. Staff consistently reported the provider was approachable and really encouraged them to go the extra mile.”
