Birchwood Bungalow is home to seven people with learning and physical disabilities. It is situated in the picturesque village of Park Street, St Albans. The home has a large secure garden and is surrounded by woodland which can be accessed via a small lane leading to various footpaths.
The people supported at Birchwood Bungalow have opportunities to participate in a variety of activities both in-house and in the community. These include art and music therapies, aromatherapy, going to the cinema and restaurants, shopping, visits to parks, holidays, parties, takeaway nights, DVD nights and art and crafts sessions with staff. House meetings are held monthly where everyone is supported to discuss different subjects.
Park Street has a parade of small shops only a few minutes walk from the bungalow. The people we support are regular visitors to the shops and the local hairdressers, where the stylists know them well.Â
We support individuals to have regular contact with family, if they wish, and we assist one person to meet up with people she knew from her previous home.
We have a robust recruitment procedure and staff undergo both statutory training and additional training around the individual needs of the people they support. The staff team bring a diverse range of skills and knowledge to their roles.
People are supported to make choices, with assistance appropriate to their needs. For example, one person will go into the car park to indicate when she wishes to go for a drive.
The ground floor has a spacious kitchen/diner, a quiet room, a lounge, two specially adapted bathrooms and six private bedrooms, each decorated to suit the individual’s taste. There is another bedroom and bathroom upstairs.
We have two vehicles which enable the people we support to access local facilities, as well as attend their health appointments.
