Our purpose at Woodhouse Hall is to provide the highest standards of support and accommodation as well as a supportive environment for 8 adults with learning disabilities and challenging behaviours. We are situated in a small residential community called East Ardsley near to the large cities of Wakefield and Leeds.
Overview of service
Woodhouse Hall provides 24-hour support to a high standard for adults with learning disabilities and challenging behaviours. We believe that each person who uses our service is a unique individual and as such will receive a personal plan of support. We strive to encourage the people who use our service to exercise their own choices, feelings and emotions. We encourage independence through our philosophy of care and support people's wishes to privacy and dignity with total respect for personal beliefs and views.
We endeavor to get to know the people that we support and understand what may be the cause/trigger of their challenging behaviour. It is important to respond to challenging behaviour in a supportive way that minimises the need for physical intervention. Our staff are fully aware of the possible factors that could lead towards challenging behaviour and are trained in how to use appropriate diversionary tactics.The staff team use Intensive Interactions to support people with communication. Known methods of communication are formulated into a communication dictionary to ensure that each individual has consistency from everyone who communicates with them.
What it's like to live here
Woodhouse Hall is a structured activity programme based around the philosophy of enabling individuals to reach their full potential and personal growth. People are encouraged to be as active in the running of the Home as possible. Everyone has a single bedroom that is personalised and have lockable doors. The people who use our service are engaged in a number of stimulating activities that reflects personal choice and interests.
The people who use our service have the follow-up support for additional health needs, and to carry out medical review and also have access to local health services including optician, dentist and chiropodist as and when required. Individual programmes and person centered support plans enable community participation and integration.The people who use our service have season tickets to Knowsley Safari park and enjoy day trips to places of interest. The staff also supports individuals to use public transport for local journeys and to access local leisure and shopping facilities. The staff will support people to access colleges and further education. People are fully supported to pursue interests and hobbies which include private music lessons and reflexology.
Surroundings
Woodhouse Hall is in easy walking distance of all local amenities. The Home is close to major bus routes and near to the M1 and M62 motorways giving easy access to towns and cities such as Leeds and Sheffield. We can also be reached by train as the train station is in Wakefield just four miles away.
The village of East Ardsley has local amenities such as pubs, shops cafes, community centres and library. The nearby towns of Leeds, Morley, Bradford and Wakefield are renowned for they shopping experiences as well cultural heritage. The area offers something for everyone, theatres, museums, theme parks, leisure facilities, colleges, university, or the breathtaking scenery of the Yorkshire countryside.
Service facilities
The people who use our service have access to a minibus, driven by staff as well as excellent links to community transport promoting independence and confidence. This enables people to access facilities and places of interest which are not in the local vicinity. To the rear of the Home is a large garden where the staff are eager to support horticultural pursuits as well as games of football.
The 19th century building provides plenty of space so people can choose to socialise, relax in the lounges or enjoy personalising they own rooms. A staff member at Woodhouse Hall was the 2009 Craegmoor regional winner for making a difference. She has helped people understand about flavours and has introduced people to new ways of preparing food. This was celebrated with a taste of Africa event.
