Windsor House provides 24 hour support for 14 people with learning disabilities, acquired rain injuries and Dementia. We aim to provide a safe and homely environment, where all individuals can make their own choices about the support they receive. We do everything we can to improve the health and wellbeing of the individuals we support and as a team we are focused on building positive outcomes for everyone.

Overview of Service

Windsor House provides 24 hour support for 14 people with learning disabilities, acquired brain injuries and Dementia. Our dedicated and friendly Multi Disciplinary Team of staff are well trained and receive additional training to support the specific needs of individuals, including pressure area care and Dementia and palliative care.

The service is divided into 2 units. Our older people unit supports 7 adults who are over the age of 60. This unit has all the relevant equipment to aid the support of these individuals, including a lift, an Arjo bath for assisted bathing, a walk in shower and wide doorways for easy wheelchair access. We also have various hoists available, where required.

Our other unit provides support for 7 adults with learning disabilities, Autism, challenging behaviour and acquired brain injuries. Staff on this unit receive additional training to enable them to meet the needs of all individuals, including active support training and a variety of communication support training. We aim to enable the people that live here to do so as independently as possible and to move into supported living, if they wish to.

Everyone at Windsor House is involved in designing their own Person Centred Plan, with staff support. The plans are tailored to suit individual needs and provide the correct level of support required. They also enable all individuals to make their own choices about the support they receive. We encourage and support everyone to recognise and identify their goals and ambitions and how they would like to go about meeting them.

What It's Like to Live Here

Everyone living at Windsor House has their own weekly timetable, which details their preferred activities. These consist of in-house and community based activities and many individuals attend college and work placements.

Those who would like to move on to supported living also attend basic skills sessions, which enable them to develop their daily living skills, including safety, money, self-care and social skills. Each individual is also allocated a "House Day". On this day they are responsible for cooking, preparing and buying the ingredients for a meal. They are also encouraged and supported to help with household activities, such as cleaning their bedroom and washing, drying and ironing their belongings. On this day they choose the evening entertainment, such as a DVD of their choice. The "House Days" and skills sessions are devised according to the ability and choice of each individual.

The beach is close by and some individuals enjoy going on scenic walks. Everyone is encouraged and supported to choose and plan their holidays.

Individuals often invite their families and friends to visit and take part in our open days and activities, and people attend the annual Special Olympic Games.

Surroundings

Windsor House is located in Westgate; a lovely, peaceful village, which is just down the road from the popular seaside resort of Margate. Westgate has a variety of shops, a cinema, cafes and bars and a beach, all within easy reach. The local bus service is wheelchair accessible. The train station is within walking distance of the service.

Service Facilities

Windsor House is a charming, detached property, with easy access to the front and back gardens for people with physical disabilities. Both units are homely and welcoming and have been thoughtfully laid out and designed to suit the many and differing needs of the people living here. Everyone is encouraged and supported to personalise their bedrooms.

With staff support, individuals devise weekly menus and all dietary requirements and preferences are catered for.

The garden has a patio area with seating, for people to eat outside if they wish to. There is also a BBQ area that is very popular during the summer months and a grassed area for games and activities.
