Mandalay is a six place service for young adults with a learning disability and associated needs. The aim of the service is to provide a warm, welcoming and safe environment while promoting independence, while supporting people to develop new skills and experience new opportunities.

The service is situated in Witham, Essex and is a two minute walk from the town centre, where numerous shops and amenities are available. The service is easily accessed by public transport; there is a bus stop directly outside and the nearest train station is half a mile away and gives easy access to London, Clacton and other nearby places.

The people who live at Mandalay are supported to choose and access a wide range of group and individual activities. These may include swimming at the sports centre, which is situated opposite the service, bowling, visiting parks, river walks, snooker, pub visits, going to the cinema and shopping. Other activities, tailored to specific health and educational needs, are identified through assessment and detailed on the individual’s care plan. Examples include speech and language therapy, or undertaking a course at the local college.

People are empowered and supported to make choices in their everyday lives. They are supported by experienced members of staff to build everyday life skills, such as cooking, cleaning and shopping.

Everyone is encouraged to interview potential staff members and meet regularly with all staff and management to discuss any concerns, issues or ideas for the service. We work with each person, their families and others close to them to create individual person centred care plans, to achieve the best possible outcomes.

The staff team are supported by a number of professionals, these include Occupational Therapists, Psychologists, Psychiatrists and other medical professionals.

Each person has their own bedroom with en-suite facilities. There are three bedrooms on the ground floor and three on the first floor. The service also has a large dining room, a lounge, a kitchen, an activity room and a utility area. All rooms are tastefully decorated and service users are encouraged to personalise their own bedrooms. There is a large garden to the rear of the property, featuring a vegetable patch, equipment for outdoor activities and a patio area with a barbecue and garden furniture.
